“Open roles have fallen an eye-popping 30% since peaking two years ago,
but HR professionals still face massive workloads to find the right candidates.”
– Korn Ferry (this week in leadership)
Let’s dig a bit deeper here:
Ok, I received an email from Indeed indicating that I should be applying for a job as a Swim Instructor @ Goldfish Swim School. (see picture)
OK, AI tell me what in my resume tells you that I would be a good swim instructor?
OK, I might like swimming as my hobby but as a job, maybe not?
OK, my background is in organizational behavior, mental fitness, coaching & psychology.
OK, and what would the salary be? (salary $22-$24 an hour) / part-time
OK, Benefits:
- Flexible schedule
- Employee discount
- Paid training
- Opportunities for advancement
- On the job-training
AI Reality vs human:
“The latest AI tools for job recruiters can help review and rank potential candidates, but after that, experts say, it’s up to humans to find the best fit via interviews, assessments, and job references. “Ask AI to determine whether someone works well with others, and it’s terrible,” says Shanda Mints, Korn Ferry’s vice president of recruitment process outsourcing analytics and implementation.”
In my career as a human resource professional, I have conducted many job interviews and all I can say:
- It takes time to get to know the person rather than a piece of paper that can be AI generated.
- It takes time to find the right fit for the team and the organization.
- It’s also about asking the right questions, rather than using the usual canned questions.
- Candidates get highly creative to fit into the recruiters’ box.
- Training the recruiters well is key to success!
As an executive coach, I have been training many individuals and recruiters to ask different questions for job seekers. It’s about training and coaching the recruiters to detect the right fit. It’s like in sports, the more you train the better you become; hence a coach can be extremely useful.
Great talent is rare but can be found. Great talent can be found but it takes time, it’s about building a relationship for the longer term.
